2016 Key Labor Law Changes

To go along with last week’s blog, here’s a quick bullet list of key labor law changes* that all business owners should be aware of:

Senate Bill 579

  • New Minimum Wage: $10 per Hour

Kin Care Law

  • Employers are to allow the use of half of accrued sick leave to care for family members
  • Employers with 25+ employees must allow 40 hours of unpaid time each year

Exempt Employees

  • Must pay FT EE’s $41,600 in Salary (or double minimum wage)

Senate Bill 358

Recordkeeping Act

  • Increased in-house reporting requirements from 2 to 3 years

Equal Pay Act

  • Requires ER to explain/justify pay differentials between employees

California Healthy Family Bill 1522

  • Paid Sick Leave Act
  • Must show on pay stub
  • Provide employees with an accrual of 1 hour for every 30 hours worked
  • Allow employee to use 24 hours per calendar year
  • Allow carryover of at least 48 hours into new calendar year
  • Print the employees balance on pay stub

*Required for all California employers as of January 1, 2016
